The GARDEN project continues to gain momentum! On 19–20 June 2025, partners from across the Mediterranean convened in Heraklion for the 4th Steering Committee Meeting. Hosted by our dedicated partner, LDO Heraklion, the two-day event was held at the vibrant Cultural Conference Centre and marked an important milestone in our joint mission to build resilient, circular, and sustainable food systems.

Two Days of Insight, Collaboration & Local Connection

The meeting began with a guided walking tour of Heraklion’s historic centre, offering a warm and cultural welcome to participants. This informal opening paved the way for two intensive days of interactive sessions, focused discussions, and shared learning experiences.

Throughout the event, project partners presented updates from each pilot site, highlighting local progress, context-specific challenges, and innovative adaptations. These exchanges showcased the richness of territorial diversity while reinforcing the shared vision and goals that unite the GARDEN consortium.

Key Work Package Sessions

WP1 – Focused on finalized deliverables (D1.1.1 and D1.2.1), with discussions around refining them in light of recent pilot activities.
WP2 – Presented updated communication tools, participatory methodologies, and drafts of brochures and maps aimed at engaging local stakeholders.
WP4 – Emphasized pathways for capitalising on project results, crafting policy recommendations, and enhancing GARDEN’s presence in Euro-MED and other key platforms.

WP3 in Focus: From Plans to Practice

A central highlight of Day 2 was the technical deep dive into WP3, dedicated to the implementation of solutions at pilot sites. Partners presented Deliverable D3.1.1, which compiles technical data sheets documenting applied solutions across territories.

This led to rich discussions around:

  • Technical specifications and design choices

  • Context-sensitive adaptation needs

  • Lessons learned from the gap between planning and execution

The session was enriched by the presence of the Project Officer, whose insights helped sharpen the strategic focus and supported a constructive dialogue on how to overcome emerging challenges while ensuring technical coherence across the project.

Field Visit & Cultural Immersion

Participants had the opportunity to visit the Heraklion Central Food Market, one of GARDEN’s pilot sites, where project principles are being put into practice. This on-site experience provided valuable insights into how urban planning, local production, and consumer engagement can be harmonized.

The meeting concluded with a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, offering historical context to the region’s enduring relationship with food, trade, and place — reminding us that sustainable futures are deeply rooted in the past.
