Day 2 (10.10.2025) – How to Maintain Your Car Sustainably

Location: Volan Trans Driving School

This second session focused on practical steps to reduce vehicle emissions through maintenance and eco-driving, tailored specifically for driver-candidates and instructors.

Key recommendations presented

  • Regular maintenance: Changing engine oil, filters, spark plugs, and cleaning the catalytic converter. Keeping the engine operating efficiently reduces pollutant formation.

  • Tyre pressure: Each tyre under-inflated can increase fuel consumption by 2-3%. Lower fuel use typically means fewer emissions.

  • Quality fuel & avoiding uncertified “chips”: Using poor-quality fuel or tuning chips may boost performance short-term but increase harmful emissions and damage emission-control systems.

  • Eco-driving behaviours: Smooth acceleration and braking, avoiding unnecessary idling (“празен ход”), maintaining a moderate speed. These reduce fuel consumption and pollutant output.

  • The session included demonstrations and interactive parts to show how even small changes in driving style or maintenance translate to real emission reductions.

Additional context
Fuel-burning vehicles emit greenhouse gases (primarily CO₂, but also CH₄ and N₂O) as well as pollutants affecting air quality and health. Maintenance and driving style are among the controllable factors that affect emissions from vehicles throughout their life cycle.
By emphasising sustainable maintenance and eco-driving, the lecture empowered participants with immediate actions they can take — beyond simply waiting for regulatory change.
