The DANOVA NEXT project has developed a comprehensive Strategy for Accessible Transport in the Danube Region, designed to address the barriers faced by persons with disabilities when using public transport. The Strategy aims to support transport operators, public authorities, disability organisations and other stakeholders in creating a more accessible, inclusive and user-friendly transport environment.
The document highlights the current state of accessibility across the Danube Region, identifying existing strengths, gaps and disparities between countries and transport systems. It also addresses key challenges such as the lack of harmonised accessibility standards, uneven implementation of EU accessibility legislation, limited awareness, insufficient investment and the need for improved staff training in the transport sector.
The development of the Strategy was based on an inclusive and participatory process involving project partners and a wide range of stakeholders. Focus groups, local forums, transnational working group meetings, surveys, interactive workshops and on-site assessments of transport hubs such as airports, ports, bus terminals and train stations were carried out in order to collect evidence and practical insights. This ensured that the Strategy reflects real needs, everyday challenges and concrete experiences from across the region.
The Strategy provides practical guidance for improving accessibility through targeted measures, good practices, an assessment methodology, strategic areas for action and a framework for innovation and advanced technologies. It also encourages the use of digital tools, accessible navigation solutions, smart services and disability-awareness training for transport staff in order to improve the travel experience of passengers with disabilities.
For policymakers, the Strategy offers guidance on integrating accessibility into urban, regional and national transport planning. For transport operators, it serves as a practical tool for assessing and upgrading infrastructure and services. For disability advocacy organisations, it provides an evidence-based instrument to support policy dialogue, advocacy and co-creation of inclusive transport solutions.
With its practical and strategic approach, the DANOVA NEXT Strategy supports the transition from fragmented initiatives to a coordinated, impact-oriented model for accessible mobility. Through this result, DANOVA NEXT contributes to building transport systems where accessibility is not treated as an additional measure, but as a core standard for quality, equality and social inclusion across the Danube Region.
